| ~~Anatomy of an Herbal Salve~~ Ever wondered how an herbal salve works? Here's a quick rundown. Now, keep in mind that this is a much over-simplifed explanation and I've taken out the technical terms for ease of reading. When designing an herbal salve you need three basic things~ ~ Botanical butters and/or oils~ These all have their own healing characteristics, such as moisturizing, healing, repairing and regenerating tissue. They are more than that, though. Botanical butters and oils have the ability to seep into the skin and repair, not just the top layer of skin, but the deeper layers, also. Some of them are even capable of penetrating into the muscles and tendons. This is especially beneficial when the butters and oils have been infused with healing herbs because it carries the herbal properties into these tissues, too. ~High Quality, organically grown or wild-crafted herbs~ How your herbs are grown is very important to the quality of the finished product. Herbs grown using chemical fertilizers and other artificial methods contain traces of those poisons. Many of those chemicals are known to cause a variety of diseases including cancer and nerve damage. When your herbs are grown organically or harvested ethically from the wild, they are free from these dangerous chemicals and contain only pure, natural healing qualities. ~Wax~ Of course, the wax is used to harden the salve, but it should be more than that. Some waxes, like parafin, simply coat the skin and contain no healing properties. This can be dangerous because the skin is meant to breath. Oxygen is needed in every pore of our bodies. Our skin is also meant to release toxins that have built up in your blood. By coating the skin with an unnatural wax, you cut off your skin's ability to both absorb moisture and oxygen, and release toxins. Instead, you should look for products that contain botanical waxes, such as candelila wax, or beeswax. Both of these contain a long list of healing properties that will not only help solidify a salve, but will allow your skin to breath and add healing properties to your finished product. ~A couple of things to remember about your herbal salve ~ Weather will affect the consistency of your salve but not the effectiveness. Extreme cold will cause your salve to harden, crack and get a white 'film' throughout it. Extreme heat will cause your salve to soften or melt. It is perfectly fine to stick a melted salve in the fridge or a frozen salve in a warm spot to get it back to a more user-friendly texture. In every ointment and salve, you'll notice that there may be organic matter still present, usually in the bottom. This is simply the herbs that couldn't be strained out and will cause no adverse effects. Tamara's herbal salves are extremely economical! A tiny bit goes a very long way. It only takes a dollop about the size of a pea to cover an area about the size of your hand. If you find that one of your salves leaves your skin feeling heavy or oily, try using less. These should soak into your skin within minutes and should leave behind no greasy feel. |
